How about the 3-5000 range.
Just for interest sake.

well for projectors

a Runco CL-420
SIM2 Domino 30H
but nothing beats a Infocus Screenplay 5000 this is what I have at home and for the price the thing kicks ass

LCD's
anything AQUOS good s***

rear projection
never like them so dont realy care

Plasma
would not even take one if it was given to me Plasma is one of the worst display types

get what ever you like just make sure that you get the right one

i.e.

1280x720 or 1920x1080
these are the only res you want there for your image is true

component inputs
make sure you have the right # of inputs plus make sure you have 2 or 3 extra for futrue this is the only signal path that carries "HD" other then HDMI

HDMI
is only RGB with audio nothing more since nothing has HDMI i.e. tuners or switchers and if you are doing a surround system then HDMI is useless cuz if that was so then we would not be looking at TVs at this price just so you know a theatre tuner with 3HDMI inputs and a HDMI out would run you around 10G's thats just for the tuner nothing else

Placement of the TV
Plasma suck in the sun or high light area

LCD
ok in sun and light

Pay no attention to contrast and s*** Manufactures inbellish then and do nothing for you unless you set you tv up with a test disc

last but one of the most importent is play with the tv at the store grab the remote and play with all the settings turn down the brightness and the contrast cuz the stores crank them up to make the pic bright and stuning you put a cable signal to them and everything will be washed out plus your lamp will last 1/2 the life
the stores like bestbuy are out to get your $$$$ and pray on the no educated so look around before you buy remember you get what you pay for a $1000 tv will look like a $1000 tv

call me if any one needs help and i will be happy to help you out just dont but an AV cuz your friend says it's good cuz your the one watching it
