It's an awesome motor, but as SCC noted in their preview of the Mazdaspeed 6 last year, 2 things are glaring with that motor (not that it would stop me from buying one!):
The engine seems to level off and run out of steam at 6000RPMs. SCC attributed this to the Mitsu turbo being a bit smallish and not being able to keep up with the ultimate demands of the engine. That, or the direct injection really hamstrings the engine up high.
The intercooler is mounted on TOP of the intake manifold / top of the engine. Mazda cited space concerns and packaging woes. Apparently none of their design techs ever saw either FATF movie. Sorry, but as much as I can appreciate and understand the cause of the first issue, I'm not buying their lack of thoughfulness on the second one.
Of course, having said all that... I'd be happy to see what a lease on one would run us :D
