For guys with sedans.... Which was the best way to point the sub. I know that when I put mine right up against the trunk, I get WAY more bass, but is it the best place for it?

Thoughts?

Hatch guys don't really matter, I think the hatch being a cavern that it is.... A sub probably sounds the same any way you put it no?

Given that Ford sees fit to mount the sub on the side of the trunk near the folding seatback, I would that would be the best compromise unless you were planning on yanking out the spare tire and using that area as a sub enclosure space.

Anything else and you're chewing up useful trunk space, unless you have another vehicle as your "grocery getter"

It's not a space issue, I'm just wondering where I would get the best sound.

Ford only has it mounted on the side because that's the most practical place to put it. Ford isn't concerned with SQ.

I mean they put the BIG cup holder on the passenger side for christ sakes :rolleyes:

You've sat in mine, right? I've got it firing rearward with the phase set normally. I've tried it with a polarity flip... it sounds worse.

Rearward, sealed single 10". No problems, lotta thump.

face the sub(s) to the rear, won't sound that bad at all and seems to give more bass.

and for the record it does matter how you place your sub in a hatch.

In my mitsu, I have a 12" facing the trunk, and I lower the 60 part of the seats to allow for more bass. Tried all different ways, and found that to be the most to my liking. The only other way that I found it to give a lot more bass, was when I pulled the spare, and fired it at the trunk.

In the end though I would just play around, and test it out in different positions, and you'll find what is best for you.

Face It Backwards, In all the cars with trunks Ive done installs in the best is backwards (with very few exceptions). If you mount them forward, you will likely get the common "when my trunk is open, My Bass is louder" situation. If you want the best sound spend a few $'s and dynomat the trunk lid and the rest of the trunk lid, keeps bass in rattles out.

Subs seem to work best when they are loaded, meaning if they are facing a wall or another sub. I can't remember why or the term associated with this but try it out :)

i have my subs pointing towards the trunk i think it sound the best like that but you get alot more trunk rattle

I'm just wondering a couple things here?

1. do you have a sealed sub? (there's a plexy glass cover at the front of the speaker) If you do it doesn't matter, cause that is your back pressure point.

2. If you don't I suggest you point it to the back of the seat in the trunk. I learned this in my electronics training at St. Lawrence college. This reason is that when you put it against the seat it is a solid point for back pressure and the trunk lide is held on with two hinges and a latch (with bolts) that can loosen.

It may sound good at first but over time it will vibrate the bolts loose and cause vibration that will cause a lose in bass hertz. the frequency of the vibration will be out of phase with a portion of the actual subs frequency and they will cancel each other out (a phase shift has occured)

Don't get me wrong you could have that issue with facing it to the seat or the trunk lide. It is a lot less likely to happen when it is facing the seat though.


IMO i would seal the sub speaker. then your back pressure point is solid and closser to the actual speaker which will give you a clearer and less degrated sound. I did it to mine and it sounds 10x better with the sealed case (or glass pack in the techie world.

For a sedan I'd put it firing backwards if you want lots of bass (echo is deeper generally than a straight punch) or about 3-4 " away from the seat facing forward if you just want your sound rounded out. In my ZX3 my old box was aimed at the rear, awesome bass with ok sound quality, now it's fiberglassed into the spare tire well, stunning SQ and huge bass when I want it. I would never personally do a bandpass box, sealed as above mentioned which will have a port. I always go with a completely sealed fiberglass box, it flexes just enough to really push the sub hard and being totally sealed it is way crisper.

Well thats another way of doing it, but not always immidiate bass......a little digestion required first.

Altogether lifted the trunk floor about 4", nice to have a trunk back though. Going to redo the floor piece eventually and put the on the side of the trunk.
