I know some of you have other vehicles than a Focus, and I am posting this for a buddy. He is looking at buying a new vehicle, and I've tried to convince him to buy a Focus, but, he's set on an SUV. He's looking at the Hyundai Tuscon, but, I'm trying to sway him towards the 2008 Escape. Which one is a better overall vehicle, including price.

I have a couple of co-workers with the Santa Fe and they seem happy.

I've done a quick spec online of the 2008 Escape XLT FWD V6 and the Tuscon GL V6 FWD... I have to say, the Escape comes out better equipped for the cash. Heck, the Canadian Winter Package even comes with heated leather seats on the Escape.

I finally saw a 2008 Escape on the weekend in person at the dealer... they're much more impressive in-person.

There's really no cut and dried answer to this question: is your friend going to lease or purchase - finance or pay cash - keep it 'till it falls apart or replace every three years? The answer to these questions should factor into the equation.

Too often the emphasis is on purchase cost - really the cost of ownership is what he should be considering and depending on how long he plans on keeping the vehicle the warranty coverage might be important.

And really it should start with a test drive - which one fits him better and feels better to him on the road?

Whatever vehicle is at the top of his list, he's doing himself a disservice by not checking out 3 or 4 other vehicles in the same class - and that means long test drives on all of them, on the roads he will be driving every day.

Bottom line: if he's considering a Tucson he most definitely should take an indepth look at the Escape - it has a good track record and there's a reason it's the top selling vehicle in its class.

Seems like the hyundai dealer is making door to door calls or soemthing...lol...almost every second house has a Hyunday on my street, some have 2!

I like thier 07 SUV's, they really look good, better than the escape by far, but I wouldn't know how they drive....he's gonna have to try em out for himself really.

i think the fact that they actually make pretty good cars these days might have something to do with it.

jen and i would consider a hyundai, if i didin't think they were so damn ugly :s
my good friends bought a santa fe about 4 years ago and they have had ZERO problems with it.

My brother had a Tucson and it rode pretty well the only thing that stopped me from buying one was that they were still too expensive used but I did have my eye on a couple. The Tucson even tough it might not be the prettiest of all SUV's has one nice feature the whole interior including the passenger seat can be turned into a flat floor for hauling stuff around going to Ikea is a breeze, my buddies and I took the Tucson to Montreal for the F1 weekend a few years back and the 4 of us didn't complain about the amount of room, the only complaint about the Tucson could be that it uses Hyundai's previous generation of engines so the 2.7L V6 is a bit on the thirsty side I know because my Santa Fe has the same identical engine. If your buddy is looking to tow anything I would probably go with the Escape the Tucson can't tow too much beyond the basic trailer, I don't know about 2008 Escape but the older ones had a pretty small gas tank and couldn't go as far as the Santa Fe even tough there mileage was almost the same. Also the Escape has the advantage of being a Ford without actually being a Ford has its built at a Mazda plant along with its corporate cousin and that is a big bonus just ask the guys driving around there 90's Escorts(aka Mazda Protege).

I've heard the same thing, normally the imports are known for being really fuel efficent, this one unfortunately is not.

I don't think I would get one for the sure fact the everyone has one...

there is a good SUV chalange they did on http://www.drivingtelevision.com/ they did all the SUV's and you can watch it yourself, but the Escape they used was the 2007 model not to 2008, they also have the test drives of the Escape and Escape Hybrid on their site with video too..

On and they said the Tucan was ok, but really tiny for an active family.

The guy just wants to sit up high. I told him the Focus has a seat adjustment to raise the height. He didn't appreciate that.
