Father Sick In The Hosptal
#1
I'm not sure anyone will be interested in this post, if you're not up to reading anything depressing, I'd suggest bailing now...

If you're still here, here's the story:

My father who is now 66, was diagnosed with Diabetes last Christmas. Sure it was a shock, he ate well, got a lot of exercise because of his job (He works as a greenskeeper at a local golf course and during the summer he's working 14 hours a day, six days a week) but these things happen right?

Then three weeks ago, I get frantic phone call from my stepmother saying that my father is in the hospital. Naturally I'm anxious as hell and get up to the hospital right after work to see him. The hospital does some tests and releases him with a new more restricted diet and water pills as they suspect liver issues but can't say for sure, so they tell him to see the liver specialist in two weeks time.

Now I went to see him after he was released, he didn't look right but he was relying on the advice of the doctors and was determined to stick it out until he at least saw the liver specialist.

I then find out that last Friday he saw the specialist, he was in agony (hadn't been at work for a week) and they throw him right back into the hospital (This is all from my stepmother) So I go and see him again in the hospital this past Monday...

I've never seen him look like this, pale and gaunt, hell he looks like he weighs less than my brother, who weighs all of 160lbs (if that) his eyeballs are as yellow as a pad of stickynotes and he sounds like he's 86 not 66...

The liver specialist is a real piece of work too, breezes in, telling my dad that they'll release him in two days and is so clueless about his case that when my dad mentioned about the ultrasound he was supposed to have the following day, the specialist is left scrambling to go through the file and ends up going "Oops... whatever" If he wasn't so important for my fathers (and others well being) I would have cracked my cane over his obtuse skull...

Meanwhile I'm sitting here going crazy with worry, they still don't have the test results from the latest batch of tests they did to him at the beginning of the week and looks like he's stuck in the hospital for an undetermined amount of time.

Sorry for the rant... this has been stewing inside me for nearly aweek :(

Well I am sure once they run the gammet of tests they might come up with some results. Hopefully they get to the bottom of this shortly. Sorry to hear that he still isn't doing well. Is his blood sugar alright? Hopefully his liver is doing ok, that is one of the things that can go wrong with diabetes. Stay cool, let the doctors do their thing and hopefully you start getting some answers soon.

You and I could share stories, but we would bore each other as my father has the same illness with a stroke and a heart attack.

It is very hard to chase doctors and get answers. But you and your stepmother have to do it.

Keep your chin up and best of luck to your Dad.

Sorry to hear about your Dad. It's tough to see the man who brought you up and guided you, (or tried to ) along the way become a different man. It might be worth your peace of mind to take some time to spend with him, and make sure he's getting the right care. Don't take the crap from the Doctor's as Gospel, ask all the questions you have, and make sure the questions get answered. Afterall, a Doctor is only a person, not a God, even though some think they are.

shitty man.. sorry to hear of your troubles.

It's a shock and depressing to see friends, parents, and loved ones in their worst moments, but keep your chin up, chase those doctors around, and hopefully this will come to a happy conclusion.

Hang in there man... sometimes it's as frustrating as a ricer with a fartcan at 2AM, but eventually, just as the ricer leaves.... all troubles shall pass.

Stick with it, keep your cool and keep an eye for attractive nurses. ;)

I'd Fedex a beer but I can't guarantee the state of it when it gets there.

Thanks folks, right now its the not knowing that's killing me as much as finally knowing what it is so that we can deal with it.

Seeing him like this, when this time last year he was still able to pick me up (I'm 195lbs and 6'2") and haul me over his shoulder is damn depressing :(

Sorry to hear about your dad, Nef. We've been going through ongoing health issues with my father-in-law for over 4 years. I understand the pain.

It's amazing though what good spirits and hope can do!

Just finished talking to my father at 4:30pm.

They still don't have test results for him, though they did move him down to the third floor from the sixth

Geez, I thought getting him a semi-private room would put an end to the "shuffle him around like a box of bolts" :(

At this point I don't know but I suspect not, because Hepatitis was one of the first things they screen for. Jaundice has been mentioned which makes sense if his liver function has diminished. I'll see if I can pump hospital staff for information while I'm there today visiting ...
