Ok, I just bought a new laptop (HP DV9933CA from Costco) and it came with the usual craptacular bloatware trials/demos on it, and it has a 60 day free trial of Norton Internet Security.
Since I want some protection, and don't really care for Norton anymore (too much of a resource hog for me), I've been thinking of either going the free route, or buying Trend Micro Internet Security. I've had mixed results with AVG before, and good results with Trend in the past.
Does anybody have any suggestions as to what to go with? Trend is on sale right now for $29.99, but if I can snag something for free, that's even better!

The system is a Core2Duo T5750 with 4 GB of Ram on Vista Home Premium x64... Resource hogs like Symantec/Norton shouldn't impact it too much (I do have a Symantec corporate install package I could use from my old life as a BOFH... ).
I have always found AVG iffy. Never knew whether I could trust it or not due to some results I had.
Anybody use avast? I've heard good things about it.

Avast is OK, AVG is alright but they always try to upsell.
I used to know guys that ran Panda but I'm not sure how prevalent Panda is anymore.

I got a Q6600 QUAD CORE overclocked at 3.0GHZ(air cooled, with liquid cooled I could go to 4.0GHZ maybe a lil more) with 6GB of ram a 8600GTS NVidia Video Card, Vista home premium 32bit. I have AVG on about 7 PCs right now and no problem what so ever. The only prob is that when I uninstalled Norton from the stock settings I never dug deep enough to remove it properly and it bit in and f'd some of my bio's so it tends to freeze up on me after letting it sit for a while. And yes I've tested all of my hardware for flaws and everything is good, just waiting on vista to come down in price a lil.

Depends, if you want free then I've set people up with the free version of Avira AV. If you want to pay and want a suite product I'm running ESET security suite with zero issues (was $100 for a two year license)

If you're paying for something, McAfee is what I would recommend, really...
Dan started it...

I have no problems paying for something if it is worth it. I can write it off to my business... :)
I'm starting to lean toward (if I buy) Trend again... 3 pc licenses for $29.99 right now at FS.
I might give AVG and avast! a try again too.

Thing is though, Trend usually comes in the bottom half of any AV comparos I've read (It even gets smoked by free AV products )
It might be cheap, but I want cheap & good...

I use Trend Micro OfficeScan (free to use from work) and never had any problems.
Only thing it did is it deleted a few of my keygens/patchs since those often act as a virus, but are not.

Microsoft One Care is actually pretty good, and I've used the other virus scanners. Try the free 90 day trial to see if you like it http://onecare.live.com/standard/en-us/i...nstall.htm and if you like it, you can buy it for $20 at ncix.com
