Today's Tsc.com Dyno Day
#1
Today me and Dan went to toronto-subaru-club.com dyno day hosted by Neetronics.
Helped fellow focus member to install intake and off he went on the dyno, but had some problems due to car's auto gear box so i'm not sure what was pic power on Fusion. The thing sounded mean on the dyno though WOW.
My WRX being stage 1 (just a basic ECU flash) basicly put down 200whp/262tq. $hitty/old spark plugs let me down, need to change them asap.
Cause of these plugs I didn't get lighter pulley kit that was offered to me by Group A guys. Free installation, dyno before and after. Oh well.

Some cars were putting down crazy number...Pretty much made me feel emberessed

A big thanks to Nik & his friends, I think I would have committed murder trying to get that SRI installed. I think Steeda never tested it with an '08 (Several steps in the instructions for the "05 Fusion" didn't apply to the '08)

Also discovered that the Steeda "safe" tune doesn't live up to its billing <_<

I was just thinking the same thing. Also with the mention of "safe tune" makes me think sometime bad happened. More info required Dan. Don't leave us guessing.

probably too lean....they probably just sell the pre-canned tune from SCT. Which are 90% of the time too lean.

Sorry, I replied yesterday when I was a little bit tired and so I forgot some of the details

Essentially when they ran the car at WOT to the rev limiter (the transmission was in "D") there was one "ping" noise heard indicating detonation just before the rev limiter shut the party down at 6,200 (repeated the run after a cool down same behaviour, ping then rev limiter shuts it down)

I've been running 91 octane gas from Shell for three months straight so the chances that the octane was too low in the tank are frankly nil IMO.

They advised me to advance the timing by IIRC three degrees between the 4k to 8k band and enrichen the A/F by IIRC two percent to deal with this. I reprogrammed the ECU again with these changes but I've been unable to test them under the same conditions.

Here's the dyno graph attached (I think the numbers are a tad low because the car is an auto and doesn't want to hold a specific gear)

"ping?" geeze dan, don't go and blow up your new car.

Are they sure it was deto? Was it more than just one ping, like multiple marbles shaking around in a tin can?

Hell no, though it's not like the car will go to red line in any gear except balls to the wall in 6th (and there's nowhere, not even the big track at Mosport where the car has enough room to do that)

The ECU pushes the Aslin autobox to bring the revs down as fast as it can in the name of fuel economy and the Steeda tune doesn't alter the shift points unless I want it to (and I'm not mucking with the shift points for love or money)

All they said was one ping and the rev limiter hit right after that point and no more pings.

The numbers do seem low though Daniel ... your car is spec'd by Ford to produce 221 hp @ 6250 rpm and 205 tq @ 4800 (I'm guessing that's at the crank) - it seems a bit extreme to lose more than 50 hp - even for AWD - unless there's some sort of difference in the way the AWD dyno measures these things.

Which tune did you run ... and did you have time to re-flash between pulls?

1 ping isnt deto.

that cars loses a lot of power through AWD?!? <_<

Yeah, knowing what the car is rated to do on paper, I do suspect the problem is the autobox and how it's programmed to respond to WOT even with the 91 tune I was running.

The shop asked me if I wanted to try a pull with the autobox in the L gear position but I was more than a little hesitant after they reported hearing that "ping" while the car was in D.

I didn't get the chance to try it again with the changes they suggested, but seeing as how the changes they suggested I make would make the tune even safer, it probably will have lopped off a few HP & TQ numbers at the high end.

Using the "butt dyno" though I can safely say that the car does pull much harder than with stock tuning. I stand on it and I get a healthy shove into the seat (and into the lumbar support... ow  )

As I reported, I think it's the six speed auto causing the issue in giving such low numbers (Can't force it to hold a specified gear for love or money and even Ford says this when explaining that the L selection on the gear lever only holds gears longer, doesn't eliminate any of them.

If one ping isn't deto (and what could it be if it isn't?) are the changes I made at their suggestion to advance the timing in the 4k-8K band and enrich the a/f mixture actually going to harm the car long term? (not that I plan on matting it regularly from a dead stop to get it to hit the rev limiter at 6,200 as it goes up the gears)

Highest I heard was 540, thing sounded like it wanted to take off

But oddly enough was more stable on the dyno than mine, which lunged like a starving dog after a t bone at almost every gear change.
