summer 2011 cali vacation/FOTB/FSwerks
#1
So i proposed this yesterday in the BBM group, and now im going to post up so see what interest there is in this. mike, me, john and chris (shadowzx3) have an interest in this. it will not be for another year and a bit, will be during the summer and hoefully when focus on the beach is happening. This will be a driving thing aswell!!!

The plan would be this:

-leave on a friday morning from ontario, end up in lincoln nebraska or somewhere in that area for the first night (that will be about a 16 hour drive)

-saturday leave in the morning again, end up in las vegas for that night (another 17 hour drive)

-sunday go from vegas to anaheim california, about a 4 hour drive. yes that means we can take time in vegas if we want to.

So we would arrive in california on sunday, stay until friday (unless people want to go back to vegas for a day) and do the same thing heading back home.

To give a bit of a break down cost wise, your looking at roughly 600$ in gas, to get there and back. now that was calculated at 400 km's a tank and roughly 8000km round trip. that way, it is calculated as a higher then actual amount. extra cash is always nice after an expensive trip as i know most of us can do 500-600 a tank highway if not better.

For food, well depending on what kind of food you eat or how baller you feel, when i went to florida for my trip, i allowed 40$ for my self a day, had extra money left over as going out for dinner was never more then 15$ and the day never was more then 35$. im going to say 50$ as a buffer zone, maybe some extra for the casino etc...

As for lodging expenses, well we talked and the general consesus is that we sleep in cars on way there, hotel when we get to cali. Rooms run in the 100$ range, group rates as low as 70$ and all varying upon what hotel is chosen. so for sunday night to thursday night (check out friday morning) were looking (on the high side) at 500$.

The total for this trip, now this would be per car/person/1 room

food: 400$
gas: 600$
lodging: 500$

those would be the major expenses and since we are going to plan so far in advance, it leaves plenty of time to open a TFSA and save up some money every month.

One last note for this, in the area there are a lot of attractions. there are a few amusement parks, like disney, universal, knotts along with many other attractions besides FSwerks and the beach. so keep that in mind for things to do while in the area. we dont have to all be together all the time, it will be good to go off and do your own thing aswell so if you are interested, plan ahead for those types of fun.

So who wants to come?!

wow thats a sweet trip plan. I did that couple of years ago. Well maybe many many years ago Smile drove my 00 Zx3 from Toronto to San Jose and back. Took me 2.5days to get to Cali and 2 days to come back.

Where is Cali are you planning to go? Norcal or Socal? I guess you are planning Socal if you talk about Vegas. I did the Norcal route and actually stopped in Utah.

Can i come and play with my TDI??? Smile

Awesome, I'm in.

As for sleeping in our cars... That I think is frowned apon by the local cops lol. I think if we find a hotel along the way we can get a room for say 2 ppl and then allow everyone else to sleep in it too. That way we have a shower with A/C and TV lol.
This sounds like it is going to be amazing. I myself would like to venture out and see the Grand Canyon and sight see in Vegas.
The $ sounds about right. Have a lil extra for the rare brake down or splurging of the wallet too. Or renting ATVs and SkiDues at the beach lol.
Let's see how many ppl do participate, I'd love to see a big groupe but 5+ would be great too.

well when it comes to sleeping in cars, what we would do is go to a highway rest stop, they have them everywhere in the states. when i drove to florida i caught about 2 hours of sleep at one halfway down and then finished the rest of the drive.

We will have plenty of time to do sight seeing as well, like for instance we can stay in vegas the first chance around, or on the way back, leave a day or two early, see vegas, grand canyon and hit caesars palace.

either way this would be an amazing trip, not only is it inexpensive if there is more then 1 person to a car, but your doing the car thing to, with a group of people.

Also, we will be going to anaheim, which is Socal. Also, anyone can come, however you will look out of place in the convoy LOL however, you wont look so bad at FSwerks since eurosport is in the same building because i know i plan on going over there, not only to hang out but to get randy to work on some tuning on the dyno in person

I'm interested. Me and Nos were thinking about this a long time ago about going to FSW to get turbos installed in both our cars and drive back boosted.

As for going down, two people to a car = 12 hours driving each, make it there in probably 2 days.

Co-incidentally, our company has a subscidiary office in Reno, NV and I might be able to score some good pricing on hotels for that leg of the trip.

LOL nik, your crazy. however, it is plausible to drive the entire thing straight, 12 hours runs each, with 2 people in the car. the only thing you gotta worry about it the second person being up to par LOL

the entire trip only computes out to about 36 hours if you drive straight through, so 1 person doing 12 hours, the other doing 24. however, that would be one long time in a car. it was bad enough doing over 20 hours to florida... trust me its a long haul.

the only thing is doing it with 2 drivers, not everyone could have one. like for me, my GF would be fine by then doing that long of a drive, im not sure what everyone else's situation would be right. if you are bringing a second person tho, it cuts costs HUGE. half the gas, half the hotel room so really, for 2 people you only need 2,000$ roughly plus any extra "fun" expenses.

anyways, we have so much time to plan this that i think we will sort out a lot of stuff over the next while. after all we have over a year right? we can plan to go to an amusement park together etc.. while we are down there and do different things during the day like set up a cruise with some locals and have a meet.

One last thing, we should come up with a name for this and have decals made.

part of the ideas of what i'll do to my fofo is the dash cam. I want one. :p

oh, and I'd like to say I'm in!

a vacation to cali by car is something i've already talked about doing just for the sake of road tripping my car. This would be 10x more fun. We'll see next summer though.

More the merrirer.

We roll up in style and show off our Northern Touch to the US boys.
Running long distance won't be so nice on the cars... meaning that the second person good drive the rest of the way but it is best to let the car cool down every lil while.

So we need
Money (Some Cash and Some Plastic)
2 Way Radios
Camcorderes
A Car (With everything AOK on it)
Atleast one person with a CAA card lol
Graphics
Event Name
Car Numbers
GPS Devices
Possible Second Person
Your Happy Face
Tire plugs and mini air compressor (I can look after that)
Hotel, Gas and Mech locations Mapped out just in case
Good Mannors to the local Cops that will surely shop us lol
Driving snacks and drinks
Cloths for 2 weeks or a week then find a laundry place somewhere

anyone else have more to add?

that sounds about right. B4 you even consider this, your car must in TOP shape. you need to be able to drive 10,000 km and not have a problem. I thought my car was in top shape, but it turned out my alternator wasnt. mechanically there isnt a lot that can go wrong thats in your control. however, before hand you will want a mechanic to go over it with you, do a voltage test on alternator, make sure battery is still good, check all 4 tires, oil change, fuel filter if you havent for a while, good drive shafts, good motor mounts, the list can go on for ever, the point is to have the car set and ready to rock and roll.

On thing you definitely need. LOTS OF RED BULL. i went through 8 red bull and 4 5 hour energy things in 24 hours. u may not feel so good when u get there, but it will save you from getting sleepy and crashing.

a secondary driver is a plus, also for time for the cars to cool off, well we will have bathroom/gas stops. also would be a good idea to stop at some random rest stops, take a walk as long trips are hard on ya as you get fluid build up in your lower extremeties.

also, have everything you need for a road side emergency. john mentions tire plugs and compressor, also make sure your spare tire is in car still (mine isnt) have your jack and everything. also somebody (likely me) will bring tools aswell, that way if something does go wrong we can fix it. with the right tools, light and money we can do anything on the side of the road LOL

ok so now i feel like im ranting. Peace out

If I can make a suggestion, here's what I would bring as spare as well:

Spark Plugs
Fan Belt
Coolant
Oil
Trans Oil
Full size Spare (not the donut)
Alternator
Battery
Throttle Cable
Impact Wrench

If we all pitch in a few bucks, I bet we can have these as a standby. Plus it would be good insurance on the road.
