Going Camping For The First Time This Weekend.
#1
Ok so ya I'm 27 and this coming weekend my GF is taking me camping for the first time. Camping to me so far has been going to a cottage or staying in my parents 48ft motor home.

So I'm assuming that because she does this quite a lot she will have the majority of things but other than a sleeping bag which I bought on sale at CDN tire last night what do I need?

Any tips or suggestions, I have this image of me being dragged off into the woods late at night by some animal. Do they sell bear repellent?

So far my list is as follows.
Beer.
Sleeping bag.
Clothes that I won't mind getting dirty.

We are going to a park on Lake Simco that she always stays at.

To say the least this should be an interesting experience.
I have a few cars.

One for my dog.
One that has no roof.
One that looks good parked at the golf course.
One that is being rebuilt by a guy named Nero..... will it ever be done?

Bug spray helps.
Sunscreen helps as well.
RAID if you don't like bugs in your tent.
Flashlight.
Warm clothes, it does sometimes get cold at night. Atleast bring a sweater.
Toothbrush/toothpaste/soap/shampoo etc...

She may be bringing most/all of this....

I don't recommend using RAID in your tent unless you like huffing spray.

you have a sleeping bag, that's the biggie, I'm sure she'll have everything you need to survive, but it won't hurt to pack 2 towels for yourself, and two pairs of shoes (sandals and shoes will do), bug spray, sunscreen, and bring some old newspapers if you're going to be lighting a fire (it'll save you a lot of grief)..

and once the sun goes down, make sure anything with food in it that you're not holding onto, or sitting right beside you is stowed in the car. a cooler, bag, or putting it in your tent won't keep it safe from racoons. Racoons are your biggest enemy.

other than that, have fun... it's only lake simcoe, so not like you're far away from a bed and breakfast if things turn for the worse...:P

Thanks guys Kristin has been camping for years and years so I'm sure she will have everything else we need. Good idea on the extra pair of shoes, I think I'll bring some extra socks. One other question I had is how do you keep things safe while your not at the camp site? We are bringing our bikes up to do some mountain biking while we are there and I wonder would locking them to the car rack be good enough or should I borrow my moms SUV so we can put them inside?

Thanks I'll post up some of the pictures... that is if I don't get eaten by a fresh water shark.... Thanks NOS

It's an "in-joke" from Sara's side of the family, pertaining to camping a couple of years ago on Manitoulin Island and convincing my brother-in-law's friend that she was "shark bait" and then faking that I got attacked by sharks while dangling my arm over the rail of the boat. Funny stuff :D

you can lock the bikes together around a tree, and that is usually more than enough.. I've left bikes unattended in many parks, really, the only thing ever to get stolen from my site was food by racoons...

never had to deal with racoons in the great white north, so it was a bit of a surprise to me on the 1st time camping in southern ontario to find my cooler opened, and the hotwings surreptitiously removed.

uhh, a fishing rod of course!

Rain gear never hurts. I always lay a tarp down under the tent too, prevents dew and rain from attacking the underside of the tent... nothing worse then the inside of your tent being wet.

Sweet thanks for the help guys! LOL @ puppets wings story that would suck, she has already warned me about keeping the site free of any loose food.

Brooks: Fishing gear that's going to be provided by her uncle along with a boat on Sunday morning.... another first for me I've never gone fishing before.

A weekend of firsts I suppose.... camping, fishing and sex in a tent that should scare away all the animals! LOL

I see a trend in the suggestions, extra towels and extra socks check! LOL

What you can't let it sit for a while? Or open the 'windows'?

Neither do I... I go camping to get away from the computers, not to bring them with me.

If it's hot, you ain't gonna want any rubs man.

Tents are nasty when it's hot.

What you can't let it sit for a while? Or open the 'windows'?

if you spray it or use seam sealer, you should really give the tent 24 hours at a minimum to 'air out' properly, the chemicals don't dissipate very fast, even once the smell is gone.

well, if he's having sex in the tent, he may want rubbers regardless of the heat. :P

*shrug*

My Grandpa used to fill the tent with it... it used to suck... but I just spray a little bit to kill the bugs... seems fine to me.
