Is the synchro completely gone? If not, I'd do a little experimentation with fluid before pulling it out.
In my experience (145K), tranny fluid doesn't last long in the MTX-75. I've used ATX fluid (recommended in 2000 manual, but crap), Redline (many claim is bad for the '75), the expensive Ford synthetic stuff, cocktails of ATX and 75-90 etc... and, while some are better than others, they all only last up to about 20K before the transmission gets noisy and shifts poorly. It only uses a little over 2l of oil and works it pretty hard.
My transmission now shifts great (did replace the shift cables though) and I run - and I'm not kidding here - Canadian Tire Motomaster TDH fluid at around 9$ a 4l jug. It's a thin Gl-4 oil, so it OK for transmissions. I mix in half a 250ml tube of MolySlip with each change, and change the oil as soon as it starts getting noisy, but a about $10 each change that's no big deal.
Now it shifts great and the 3rd gear synchro works better than ever. I get best results in summer by overfilling the trans a bit (put it on a slight uphill slope and fill until it runs out the filler hole).
Playing with oil might be worth a shot before going for the BIG JOB.
