The only reason I made it to begin with is because I owned the car I had at the time outright (no monthly payments and just PL/PD for ins.) and I bundled the cost of gas into my rent calcs. Then, I carpooled with 3 other people for the 1/2 hour trip in and out each day... which paid my gas. So, I budgeted for the worst and ended up borrowing a fraction more than I would have had to. I had no choice - it was plan or fail :(
